Colourful sori of Dryopteris erythrosora
My interest in ferns goes back to university days, when the life-cycle of this group fascinated me. None-too-successful attempts to raise ferns from spores did not dampen my new interest. Indeed, on leaving university, I worked for a year with Reginald Kaye, one of the doyens of British pteridology, at his nursery in north Lancashire, where I learnt a great deal - not least, how to sow spores successfully!
This enthusiasm has remained constant, and has been a major consideration in my travels abroad, as well as in the British Isles. I grow a small selection here in Wales, reflecting my interest in hardy species, in particular those native to Japan.
